A Note on Searches
Keyword Search
You can search the intro, about you, about me, province/state and city, fields using the Keyword Search page. Just type in your search terms and click the search buttons, and viola! - the search will return the relevant pages. You can use this page to screen out or screen in in the following ways:
- +hiking -> this term will return a list of all members with the word hiking anywhere in the above mentioned fields. You could also search by city by specifying +toronto.
- -unemployed this term will return a list of all members WITHOUT the word unemployed anywhere in the above mentioned fields
- +"I just won the lottery" this term will return a list of all members with the EXACT PHRASE I just won the lottery anywhere in the above mentioned fields
- -"mamas boy" -> this term will return a list of all members WITHOUT the EXACT PHRASE mamas boy anywhere in the above mentioned fields
- +(swimming biking) -> will return a list of members with EITHER swiming OR biking OR both words anywhere in the above mentioned fields
- -(lazy stinky) -> ...I actually don't know what this will give you.
Username Search
To search for a particular member or members, enter the member's username in the box. Its that simple. If you are unsure of the full spelling, you can enter the first few letters followed by a * (the 'wildcard' character). So if you're not sure whether to look for Salima or Salimah, you can enter salima* and this pattern will match both Salima and Salimah (the search is case insensitive)
Advanced Search
This search combines the Keyword Search with options to further narrow the search by Age, Height, Religion and Country. So you can search for profiles using the keywords: +"grad student" -"high maintenance", and narrow the search down to the countries Canada and the U.S. (or all countries EXCEPT FOR Canada and the U.S.), height less than 6 ft (or greater than 6 ft, if you prefer), and you can include or exclude multiple religions as well.
Now it takes “jarak”- that is to say, a “little bit” or “kam kam” – of intellect to understand the Advanced Search. The ability to use the Advanced Search is part of separates us from the orangutans. To the right of the some of the search selections you will see the following options:
- Include ALL … in search
- INCLUDE ONLY results with the selected value(s)
- EXCLUDE ALL results with the selected value(s)
If you select the first one (Include ALL … in search) then the search will not restrict based on this criteria. So for example, if you selected this for the “In Countries” field, the search will not discriminate based on what country people are in. Now if you select the second one (INCLUDE ONLY results with the selected value(s)) then the search will include only those items that you selected. For example if you selected ‘United States’ and ‘Uganda,’ the search will not return people living in ‘Canada’ or ‘Kenya’ (or any other country that is not the United States or Uganda). Finally, if you select the third option (EXCLUDE ALL results with the selected value(s)), the search will not return results with this value in that field. For example, if you don’t want to meet anyone living Canada or Tanzania, just select these countries and then click on the aforementioned third option; the returned results will not include people who have selected those values in that field in their profile. Capisce?
